The Cherokees

The Land of the Cherokees

Gordon County describes itself as "The Land of the Cherokees." But there are no Cherokees here now. United States troops forcibly removed the Cherokees from their land even though the United States Supreme Court had ruled the lands were, in fact, Cherokee.

This history of the Cherokees is a saga of adaptation and perseverance. Here in Goddon County, the Cherokees made their capitol at New Echota. From here they began the Trail of Tears.
