Meet Our Pastor
Our pastor, Guy Kent, returned to this parish in June of 2004. Reverend Kent served the South Calhoun Circuit, of which Farmville was one of three churches, from 1973 through 1976.
During the course of his ministry, Reverend Kent has labored in a wide variety of ministries. He has pastored local congregations throughout North Georgia from the rural to urban settings. A decade was spent as Chaplain of Riverside Military Academy, where he was responsible for the spiritual life of young men from all denominations and most of the world's religions, including Buddhist, Jewish, Moslem, and others.
He also was Head Coach for TEAMS USA in soccer for seven years. In this role he recruited outstanding high school soccer players to play in the major European tournaments during the summer months. Simutaneously with his TEAMS USA responsibilities, he coached the Riverside Military Academy teams, a program that lost only eleven games in eight years. And he was Head Coach of the North Georgia College team before going to Riverside.
Our pastor has had a history of leading churches to provide ministry far beyond the resources of the membership by establishing innovative ways of financing the church’s work. This he continues to do at Farmville.
Reverend Kent is a prolific writer. His book, Heaven Came Down, sold out within months of its publication. Several limited publication books have been published following Heaven Came Down centering around the church seasons. He writes for The Calhoun Times and now authors The Pastor’s Ponderings which is published on this website three times weekly. In addition, he is the founder and writer for The Questing Parson Blog, a web-based publication read daily around the world. In November of 2009, his latest book, Lines From theTimes, was published and is available at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and other leading retail outlets.
Reverend Kent is married to the former Lynn Ellis, whose father was a founding member of The Farmville Church. He has three children: a daughter, Christi, active in the ministries of her church, a son, Matt, founder of the Pickle Shoes Dance Company and an internationally acclaimed dancer with the Pilobolus Dance Theater of which he is now a Creative Director; a son, Scott, an innovative school teacher with the Fulton County School System in Georgia and the designer of this website. He also has two step-children, Julie, in Rome, Georgia and Chris in Calhoun. Reverend Kent has been known to dote on his grandchildren, Ansley (pictured above during when the two of them spent time together in the wilds of Alaska), Faith, and Alma, Alisher, Owen, Kylee, and Sam as well as two step-grandchildren, Zac and Sara.
His sermons, delivered at the 11:00 a.m. Sunday worship service, are timely and make the gospel relevant to our daily living.
